Why White Noise Really Works
Many people wonder how and why white noise works to put a baby to sleep.
Those of us who have used the sound of a vacuum cleaner, hair dryer or the like to sooth a newborn to sleep will vouch for the powerful effect it has on babies. It really is magic! Some may wonder how can what sounds like a horrible din have such an amazing effect on a baby? If you can imagine what a baby experiences from inside the womb you will have a clue to why white noise works. Before birth a baby lives in a very noisy place. Baby can hear the constant beat of her mothers heart.Baby’s world is never silent.
Mothers also digest food which is a very noisy process.
Think of how you stomach rumbles and groans when you are hungry or have just eaten. Then there are all the sounds from the outside world. Baby can start to hear from between 16 and 23 weeks of pregnancy. By 26 weeks they can hear well enough to start processing and remembering sounds. baby will be able to hear voices, noises and all the sounds the mother hears although they are muffles by the amniotic fluid the baby live in. So when baby is born the constant noise the baby is used to changes. The world is too quiet. That is why playing white noise and in particular womb sounds is so comforting to newborns and young babies.
