Tyler comes from the transferred use of an English surname originating as an occupation describing a ‘tile-maker’. In Olde English, ‘tigele’ was the all-encompassing word for ‘tile, brick, roofing shingle’, borrowed from the Latin ‘tegula’ (covering).
A tile-maker would have been considered an important and respectable trade in medieval England and he most likely made a good living.
