Baby Lullabies Have Been Used For Generations.

For centuries, lullabies or cradle songs -songs to put baby to sleep have been used in many countries around the world to soothe and calm babies and help them to fall asleep.  The use of lullabies can be traced back to ancient times and as well as being used  in the nursery at night time, they  can be used to prepare a baby for daytime naps either in his bed or as you rock him in your arms.

Even today, many parents recall being rocked to sleep to the sound of lullabies sung gently and soothingly by their parents or even grandparents. Songs to put baby to sleep are often handed down through the generations and consequently many have changed very little over the years. Parents of new born babies or ‘expectant parents’, can ask their parents about favourite lullabies.

This will prompt many nostalgic tales and an impromptu family sing song!  If you are unfamiliar with the lullabies they can be recorded on your Smartphone so that you can get practising!

Songs to put baby to sleep are simple repetitive melodies with simple repetitive words and sung in a soft, caressing way they are a really effective way to get babies to relax and settle for their sleep. You can either settle your baby in his bed, whilst you sing to him or you can rock him gently in your arms to soothe and calm him.

To rock your baby is a lovely thing to do and is very beneficial to the bonding between you. Be warned. Though, babies are very shrewd – even at six /eight weeks and after a couple of weeks of regularly singing and rocking him to sleep, Junior will demand the routine is continued!

If you would like to learn some songs to put baby to sleep but your family members can’t help you out, there is a wealth of different websites online with the words of hundreds of lullabies and even some videos that can help you learn the tunes and lyrics.  It is well worth playing many different tunes and seeing which ones appeal most.

‘Sleep my little baby’ and ‘Rock a bye baby’ are both classic lullabies as is ‘Hush a bye baby’. If you prefer not to sing you can of course gently and slowly hum the melody to your baby or if that doesn’t appeal either you can buy a variety of compilations of lullabies.

Whilst lullabies can be successfully used as part of the pre-nap routine for your baby during the day, they are particularly valuable as part of the bedtime routine. There have been many surveys done that show that lullabies can have a positive effect on calming babies and preparing them to sleep and also because the baby has been relaxed when he falls asleep rather than distressed this leads to a longer, deeper sleep so that the baby awakes refreshed.

Everyone loves a good lullaby and you will find that it is not just your baby who benefits from your singing but that your partner and the family dog could soon be asleep too!
