The song date back in the year 1603 when Scotland was under King James VI. It was during this period of time that King James VI decided to bring Scotland and English kingdoms together. He then became King James 1. It is then understood that Queen Elizabeth 1 named the son of the queen of Scotland as her heir. The child was James. In addition, many historians believe that the union of the two kingdoms was very important. The king had to be given the ‘The Lion and the Unicorn’ which was a cloth to identify the union.  The poem is basically based on this union.
